Yoga Nidhra

Yoga Nidra, Going Beyond Sub Conscious Mind

Everybody knows the value of daily SLEEP in maintaining our Health & Well Being. Sleep is a complete rest to our body (Heart, Lungs, circulation and other vital functions will not be rested, but they perform in an effortless easy way) and conscious Mind. this type of sleep is surely Healthy and Rejuvenating. But how many people are able to sleep in this manner?

Yoga Nidra of Sri Maha Vishnu

Yes, we forgot the Deep Sleep in this highly mechanized society, because most of the rich and neo rich  are busy more with mental activity rather than physical activity. We have motor cycles, cars, local trains, mixers, grinders, etc making us to do less physical work and save time to think/ plan/ calculate.

Human being  is composed of 5 sheaths or bodies;
1. Annamaya Kosha (Physical body)
2. Pranamaya Kosha (Energy body)
3. Manomaya Kosha (Mental body)
4. Vignanamaya Kosha (Intellectual body)
5. Anandamaya Kosha (Bliss body)

Each kosha or body is having its own functions and needs. Physical body needs daily physical activity in the form of household works, gardening, walking, sports, etc. If we think it needs only food to nourish or survive we are certainly mistaken. Just like an ideal mind is devil's work shop, without sufficient activity (depending upon age, health and other factors) physical body deprives us deep sleep. On the reverse side too much mental activity also robs us sound sleep. Present day computerized fast society demands more mental activity, in this process we loose deep sleep.

Students in Yoga Nidra class

Deep sleep is a rejuvenating therapy as the outer directed energies of sense organs are withdrawn into their sources - 6 energy centers (chakras). This freshens body and mind and prepares us - well equipped for the daily activities. These 5 koshas are complementary and mutual influencing. More about koshas in the future postings.

As Yoga Nidra Teacher

Yoga Nidra is not just for Deep sleep. It is beyond deep sleep, it relaxes the whole being, takes you to sub conscious level, it can also be used for changing ones behavioral  patterns. In fact it is highly SPIRITUAL technique can be utilized for spiritual progress. This is the intention of Swamy Satyananda Saraswathy, the inventor of Yoga Nidra. Now Yoga Nidra training is available in many towns and cities through out the World. But the original Yoga Nidra Teacher training  is at Bihar school of Yoga, BSY (now Yoga Bharathi), Munger,  Jharkhand, India.

Swami Niranjanananda, the disciple of Swami Satyananda Saraswathi popularized Yoga Nidra through
BSY ang Yoga Bharathi. By the grace of Divinity I was able to do Yoga Teacher Training course in that Spiritual Ashram during 1990.

Since 1994 I practically conducted Yoga Nidra classes for 14 years to my patients, health seekers, spiritual aspirants and all benefited in one way or other. I personally felt it is a divine opportunity to teach Yoga Nidra for so many people. Now I plan to make it available for patients, health seekers and spiritual aspirants as a personalized audio DVD.

I will share a lot of things in future postings about Yoga Nidra, yoga Nidra classes scripts and experiences of those personally attended my classes at Kadapa & Hyderabad.

Wish You Health, Happiness, Contentment, Harmony, Peace & Bliss.

Swami Satyananda Saraswati

Swami Niranjananada Saraswati

Yoga of Pathanjali Yogasutras is well known throughout the world, but Yoga Nidra is the specialization of Bihar School of Yoga (BSY) now the deemed University - Yoga Bharathi. The founder of BSY Swami Satyananda Saraswati (disciple of Swami Sivananda of Hrushikesh) is the inventor of this Yoga Nidra and he made it part and parcel of yoga training at BSY.

When I was trained as Yoga Teacher at BSY, Munger, Bihar, India during the year 1990, Swami Niranjananada Saraswati was the head of this Spiritual Ashram. Many Swanijis used to conduct different classes with strict discipline.

From morning 4 am to 9 pm it is of busy schedule of different training activities, the presence in the Ashram itself is a spiritual training. The main building representing Shat Chakras of Psychic body was constructed on the place where king Karna (of Mahabharatha fame used to meditate). Near the Ashram the sacred river Ganga flows in a half circle way. It is a beautiful panoramic view.

Myself with yoga classmates, Yoga & Yoga Nidra Teachers and
Swami Niranjananada Saraswati (1990)

Asanas class, Pranayama class, Karma Yoga period, Yoga Nidra class, Bhakthi & Bhajan periods were regular. The highlight of the course was Satsang with Swami Niranjananada. He used to answer seekers queries with clarity and simplicity. I think on every Saterday evening we used to have group prayer for the health and well being of suffering people (after reading their names) then chanting Maha Mruthunjaya Mantra for 108 times ending with Shanti Mantras. Oh! It was a tremendous spiritual training.

We will remember those sacred & spiritual days with reverence throughout this life. We are indebted to many including the Divinity for such an opportunity.

During my training one important spiritual event - Maha Shivarathri, the festival of Lord Shiva took place. An Yagna was conducted in the ashram and all the inmates actively participated. It is an event once in a life time for many.

I welcome the views and opinions of those visited this Ashram or trained there or taught yoga (as comments on this blog).
